The
Fifth Step:
"The Mental Keys" is a powerful recruiting tool
"The
Mental Keys" (TMK) is a powerful recruiting tool for two reasons.
It will help you refine your selection process and offer your prospects
a proven mental training program. (Even if your team already has
a mental training program in place, using TMK in conjunction with
it will greatly enhance its effectiveness and your understanding
of why it works.)
Years ago
an athlete was looked down upon for seeking help to improve his
or her mental game. Today, more and more golfers on the PGA and
LPGA tours are seeking help to improve their mental games to remain
competitive. More and more college golf teams are using mental training
programs to move up in the rankings.
By having
a mental training program to offer your prospects, you have a definite
recruiting advantage. Your prospects should be very receptive to
the fact that your team offers them a great opportunity to develop
their mental game because you have one of the best mental training
programs available.
When you
are recruiting for new talent, find out where your prospects' minds
are. Look for individuals that have high character as well as a
strong desire to improve. This will help you determine their potential
to become even better golfers and help your team. Ask them:
- How much importance
they place on the mental game of golf
- How much work they
are doing to improve their mental game
- The specifics of what
they are doing to improve their mental game
- What kind of character
do they have
Give them
a copy of 'Relaxed and Poised' to read. After they read it ask them
how close they are to playing that way. Listen to what they say.
Then tell them about TMK book and CD and how it is helping your
players to improve their mental games. Ask them how honest they
are. Ask them how strong is their desire to improve their mental
game and lower their score.
The answers
to these questions will give you a lot of information about your
prospects. Some of your prospects will have a lot on the ball and
some will be clueless about what they want. Some are looking for
a free ride and some are looking to find out who will help them
to get the most out of their potential.
The two
most important things you want to find out about your prospects
are how strong is their level of desire to improve and what kind
of character do they have. The most important thing a prospect should
want to find out about you is how are you going to help him or her
grow and mature.
Your success
in recruiting future A and B players will depend on the questions
you ask, how sincere you are and the strength of your conviction
that the prospect will develop more by becoming a member of your
team than going elsewhere.
